The Community Legal Clinic of York Region helps tenants from the Region in three main ways.
The CLCYR staff act as Tenant Duty Counsel at the Landlord and Tenant Board. This Board holds open hearings at the Royal Canadian Legion at 707 Srigley Street, Newmarket, Ontario, six days per month. Duty Counsel serves unrepresented tenants who have hearings that day. Duty Counsel will introduce themselves at the beginning of the hearing and serves clients through reviewing legal papers, providing an opinion or legal advice, and providing representation in limited cases. The CLCYR also operates the Eviction Prevention Program. This critically celebrated program (PDF) provides additional services and social work support to tenants facing imminent eviction whose circumstances limit their ability to maintain suitable and sustainable housing.
Our paralegals and lawyers also give summary advice on all manner of tenant and co-op related questions. This advice is given over the phone to people who ask for help from our office. Where a case meets financial, merit, and subject area criteria, the client and the CLCYR can that other services, include representation, may be appropriate.
